About the Coalition

What is the DC Coalition on Long Term Care?

The DC Coalition brings together consumers, advocates and health care providers to work with the District government to create a range of quality long-term care services available to low-income District adults with chronic care needs through Medicaid. The members have worked together since 1996 to help the District government develop diverse services for persons needing long-term care.

What are the Coalition’s Current Goals?

  • Increase in the wages of home care workers to overcome shortage
  • Implementation of consumer-directed personal care attendant program
  • Implementation of Assisted Living Residence Regulatory Act of 2000
  • Increase in the District's contribution to SSI recipients living in group homes that will become assisted living residences
  • Establishment of rent subsidy for residents of Assisted Living Residences
  • Work with Board of Nursing to unify training and credential requirements for personal care workers across the long-term care settings
  • Work with the Board of Nursing to review and clarify delegation by registered nurses of nursing functions to personal care aides.
  • Establishment of a Resource Center as a single point of entry for long-term care services, providing information, counseling, and access to the Medicaid application process and other funding.

How does the Coalition Plan to Complete its Work?

  • Gather experiences of persons in need of long-term care services through responses to this web site
  • Encourage more meetings of community members with District decision makers to discuss their long-term care needs
  • Encourage more community participation in testifying before the Council, participating in rule making procedures, meeting with decision makers, writing to officials and the media.
  • Work with the District budget process for adequate funding of all aspects of long-term care.
